Wednesday, November 5, 2008 a new day 6:15 AM i woke up this morning to the sound of wolf blitzer. i returned home from lectures to see anderson cooper. in between that time i found it incredibly hard to remain indifferent about this one momentous occasion. for the first time in history, fourty years after the death of martin luther king jr., an african-american lawyer, a father of two, is the new president elect of the most powerful nation on earth and leader of the free world. all day today, i cannot help but hear sam cooke in my head singing these words in a lullaby... ' i was born by the river in a little tent oh and just like the river i've been running ever since. it's been a long, long time coming but i know a change is going to come. yes it will. it's been too hard living but i'm afraid to die i dont know what is up there beyond the sky. it's been a long, long time coming but i know a change is going to come. oh yes it will. i go to a movie and i go downtown somebody keeps telling me, 'don't hang around'. it's been a long, long time coming but i know a change is going to come yes it will. then i go to my brother and i say, 'brother, help me please' but he winds up knocking me back down on my knees. oh there have been times that i thought i wouldn't last for long but now i think i am able to carry on. it's been a long, long time coming but i know a change is going to come. oh yes it will.
